I generally ask my freshmen students to write up their first impressions of college life in order to get a sample piece of writing from them that's genuinely in their voice (and hard and rather silly to plagiarize). The samples below are NOT posted in the spirit of making fun of these kids - they're just out of high school after all - but in the sense of 'ain't that cute,' and I always tell them they should file this writing away and re-read it their senior year.
